This ready-to-wear collection was born out of spite. When my fashion teacher assigned us to 'go back to our roots,' I asked if I could explore my Surinamese Indian heritage. The response? 'Keep it in Europe; the assignment is about historical fashion.'

That disregard for non-European history fueled my determination to prove them wrong. Long story short, the school has since revised its curriculum, and the assignment is no longer framed that way.
